Session2: Joe Capobianco and Eric Merrill Collaborate on Brandon's Back Piece

Session #2:
As the healing process from the first session came to a close, I found myself on another airplane making the trip back to Hope Gallery. Small scabs were still on the surface of the color areas and the incision points where the moles were removed were not healed at all. Luckily all the removal points were in the illustration of the woman, so the next session would finish everything but her.
I arrived early Saturday afternoon to find Eric, Joe, and Julio making last minute preparations for the Grand opening of Hope Gallery. Nervous anticipation quickly gave way to excitement and celebration. The evening was a resounding success. People from all walks of life flooded the studio. A huge table in the middle of the gallery overflowed with spectacular food supplied predominately by Julio's wife. A bartender served everyone wine and sodas throughout the evening. A spectacular collection of paintings done by the nations top tattoo artists filled the many walls of the gallery. The show featured works from Eric Merrill, Paul Booth, Tom Strom, Julio Rodriquez, Joe Capobianco, Jon Clue, Dave Fox, etc... Jime Litwalk and several of his paintings were present.

Jime was doing a brief guest spot tattooing for the weekend, it is always a pleasure to see Jime, he is an exceptional artist and a hell of a nice guy. As the rooms began to fill up the crowd exploded in conversation and excitement. After a few hours, there were so many people squeezing in, it was difficult to even get around the room. The evening was punctuated by a beautiful lunar eclipse that could be viewed from the rooftop. Joe insists that was a coincidence, but that is a perfect example of the unmistakable magic in the air that night. It was a gift to be a part of such a great night. So congratulations are in order for Eric, Joe, and Julio... The studio is phenomenally beautiful and no longer a hidden treasure on the tattoo map. Please check out Hope Gallery Tattoo For more information.

Back Tattoo
Back Tattoo The next morning we met for the second attempt on my life, I mean... session on my back. This time I had a much better idea what the day had in store for me. Eric and Joe made preparations while Jime Litwalk tattooed across the gallery from us. I feel very fortunate to have been the first tattoo done by these guys after the grand opening. However I cant say I enjoyed it as much as they did. Hysterical laughter from those two did little to cover my turrets syndrome style streams of profanity. I have never felt anything as painful as collaborative tandem style tattooing.

I have endured countless hours of tattooing all over my body by some of the roughest guys in the world, but nothing compares to the random and startling attacks lighting up my nervous system like a burning Christmas tree. Eric and Joe are incredible artists and I am in no way stating that they were not all hugs and teddy bears or whatever. It is unavoidable in a collaborative situation that the client be consistently and constantly uncomfortable. The pain is very random and always moving. I felt as though there was absolutely no control left in my body over the pain and the only reasonable option is complete abandon and surrender. There is no time to breathe or have a conversation as one begins to run out of ink the other blasts away with a fresh tube, and sometimes they both seem to magically never run out of ink at all. It is relentless and mind numbing. After about thirty minutes, I was deliriously rambling on like some drunken stripper. Who needs drugs when you don't know your name anyways right? Eight long hours later, I sounded something like Pee-Wee Herman on angel dust. The session was a success however. It is important to keep in mind that the work is getting done twice as fast, so in that respect it is an amazingly efficient process. Back Tattoo
Back Tattoo We finished everything but the central female figure and the right rib panel. In my delirium, I asked them to finish the entire piece, but the mole removal points prevented us from doing so. We will complete the piece in less than two weeks at the Richmond Tattoo Convention. This has been an amazing process and a great opportunity to visit with some awesome friends up north. Had I been aware of what I was getting myself into, I wouldn't have hesitated for a second. Yes, it was painful, the healing has been exhausting, and the dermatologist slicing off a few moles added insult to injury. Yes, the plane trips and car rides and hotel rooms are rather extreme. That is all a temporary circumstance leading to an incredibly permanent fixture in my life. It was worth every second of it
